Futsal Semifinals Recap: #2 Canadian Mennonite University defeats #3 Providence University College 6-4
Unlike the first two games of the day, this semifinal jumped off to a quick and frantic pace. Amelia Reimer scored at the 23:00 minute mark of the first half and then less than five minutes later, Madison Will sent a corner kick to Julika Kehler who tucked one past CMU’s keeper and put the Pilots up with a very quick 2-0 lead.
Chances were abundant for both sides in the early stages before PUC took a timeout with 10:24 left in the first half to get control of the pace. All-Conference selection, Marijka Yaschyshyn, had several chances early and there were near misses by Esther Schwarzkopf and Kyra Neufeld that let the crowd know that despite being down a quick two goals, CMU wasn’t rolling over.
With 6:52 left in the first, Schwarzkopf sprung loose up the right side and was fed a perfect pass that she made no mistake on, sticking it past PUC’s Keeper Kiran Hodges. Soon after, Neufeld potted her first of the tournament to tie the game at 2-2.
Yaschysyn scored with 4 minutes left in the half and all of a sudden after trailing most of the first, the CMU Blazers led 3-2.
Both teams began to slow down in the final minutes of the half, but with just 8 seconds left on the clock, Schwarzkopf had an awesome chance from about 20 feet out that rang off the bottom of the post and across the goal line, nearly making it a two goal lead.
Two minutes into the second half, Mackenzie Friesen scored for CMU putting them up with a commanding 4-2 lead. Three minutes later, Julia Kehler made the hometown PUC crowd erupt by putting one past CMU’s keeper but in the process, went down hard with an apparent leg injury. The crowd was fired up but it was short lived until Kehler was able to make it to her feet and show that she was alright. After a brief time spent on the bench to collect herself, the All-Conference goal scorer was back in and competing.
Marijka Yaschyshyn turned a seemingly harmless pass at the 13 minute mark into a run down the sideline and shot it right through the legs of PUC’s keeper. The goal put CMU up 5-3 but the stellar play of CMU’s keeper, Lydia Balsillie, was the ultimate challenge that PUC couldn't overcome. After giving up those two early goals at the beginning of the game, Balsillie shut down several really good chances and made tough saves when the play was in close.
Schwarzkopf scored with 3:20 left in the game off of a free kick to put CMU up 6-3, and there was a collective feeling throughout the gym that the women’s second semifinal had been decided. But with 1:44 left, Kehler once again struck for PUC putting them down by only 2. The pace of the game picked up again but there wasn’t enough time for PUC to mount a two goal comeback, and the final score ended with CMU ahead 6-4.
CMU’s Esther Schwarzkopf and PUC’s Julia Kehler were named Players of the Game.
